AWOL is The Door’s response to a lack of exercise and healthy eating amongst the young people that we work with on a daily basis.
For many young people, sports activities stop when PE (Physical Education) is no longer compulsory; healthy eating and lifestyle choices are thrown away with a burger wrapper. Young people find engaging with organised sports and clubs difficult – they often lack the self esteem to go along to a leisure centre or sports club, or don’t have the finance to enable them to participate.
AWOL seeks to deliver sport and exercise right where young people are; at The Door, in parks or even on the street. Over the past few years The Door has been involved with the creation of Kick Off Stroud an amazing local social enterprise which has empowered young people to become sports coaches for children and other young people throughout the town.
AWOL works alongside the Drop-In, Detached and Hope Training teams to ensure that sport and healthy living is an intrinsic part of the alternative education we are delivering. Our Saturday Kitchen sessions in The Drop-In have also introduced young people to affordable, tasty, home cooked food.
Ages 11-25 During Term Time Only.
Please bring sensible shoes, a bottle of water and any necessary medication to all sessions or you will not be able to participate.
